Getting Hugo #This theme is meant to be used with the hugo static site generator. To get hugo on your platform, please follow their installation instructions.
Create a new site #These instructions are taken from the Hugo quick start guide. Creating a new site with Hugo is done via
hugo new site quickstart replacing quickstart with the actual folder name you want for your site. You can then navigate to the corresponding folder and initialize a git repository
cd quickstart git init . Setup the liris theme #To easily keep a reference and be able to update the theme when bugs are fixed, the easiest is to setup the theme as a git submodule.
git submodule add https://gitlab.liris.cnrs.fr/cell-si/hugo-theme-liris themes/liris This will populate the themes/liris directory with the theme data. To setup your site with the theme, you can then replace the current site configuration with that of the example site you are presently reading, located at themes/hugo/exampleSite. Assuming you are at the root of the project :
rm -f hugo.toml cp -r themes/liris/exampleSite/config . You can now visualize your website by issuing the following command at the root of your site and following the instructions to point a web browser to the served site, usually localhost:1313.
hugo server You can now go on with the theme configuration.
Optionally commit and push #Now is probably a good time for your to commit and backup your work. Hugo is a static site generator and therefore automatically generates files from your input. These generated files should not be tracked by git. This can be prevented by adding paths to these files to a .gitignore file. In a simple setting the following commands issued at the root of your project will do that.
echo public/ >> .gitignore echo .hugo_build.lock >> .gitignore You can always check the untracked files using git status. You can now add the desired files to your commit, and if everything is to be tracked, this can be done by simply adding the root directory. After adding you can finally create your commit.
git add . git commit -m "initial commit" Of course, you can replace initia commit with any other message suited to your needs. If you want to push your website on the LIRIS gitlab for sharing, backup, or to use the webIDE there to edit the website in your web browser, you must first configure a remote for your local git repository.
git remote add origin https://gitlab.liris.cnrs.fr/ada/quickstart In the above line, replace ada/quickstart by your desired group and repository name on gitlab. By default as a LIRIS member, you have your own group to create your private repositories, so you can replace ada in the above with your LIRIS user. You can then proceed with a push, with an additional option to setup your local main branch to track the remote main branch.
git push --set-upstream origin main Note that there is no need for an empty repository to be created beforehand on the gitlab, this push will create the repository automatically. Please refer to the configuration of the Congo theme for details on available parameters. The sample configuration for this example site is in the exampleSite/config/_default folder as a set of toml files derived from those of the Congo example site.
Title and personal information #The title of the website and personal information if you want to use this theme for a personal web page are defined in the languages.en.toml file. This file is localized due to the en in the file name, letting you changing these texts depending on the desired language to display the web page. For this example website, another languages.fr.toml is provided for a French version.
The style of the main landing page is defined in params.toml in the [homepage] section. The layout switch decides whether there should be personal information on the page. For a personal web page, use profile, otherwise use page. The custom variable is used in this example website for the demo to be able to switch between page and profile layouts.
Logo #Main logo #To customize the logo for the website, the logo file name is specified in params.toml in the [header] section. The file path is relative to the asset folder at the root of your project.
If you further want to customize the favicon of the website, the default ones are present in the static folder of this theme, and you can override them by using images with the same name in your static folder at the root of your project.
Institutions #Institution logos are automatically added to the footer of every page of your website. Default LIRIS policy is to display each of the main institutions on every page. Current LIRIS main institutions are CNRS, Lyon 1, INSA, Centrale and Lyon 2.
Depending on your status or the purpose of you website, you may be willing to add or remove institutions. These are configured in the params.toml file. Each institution is added to a global table, and their weight controls the order of appearance of these institutions.
[[institutions]] name = "University of Asgard" url = "https://www.univ-asgard.no" logo = "img/institutions/asgard.svg" weight = 50 Changing these weights can be relevant to emphasize your employer for instance. Vector logos for each of these institutions are provided in the theme folder assets/img/institutions. You can extend the available logos by adding files in your own assets/img/institutions folder at the root of your project.
Menus #The menu.en.toml file contains menu entries for the header and footer menus. The example site only features a header menu, footer menu is currently untested for the LIRIS theme. This file is localized as well. Each menu entry looks like
[[main]] name = "Documentation" pageRef = "docs" weight = 40 As usual, the weight controls the order of the menu entries, and the pageRef is a file path relative to your content directory.
Edition on gitlab #Each page on your website is equipped with an edit button in the footer. The URL for this edit button is generated from a base URL configured in params.toml in the editURL entries. For this example site, the URL is built to be able to edit the pages on the LIRIS website :
editURL = "https://gitlab.liris.cnrs.fr/-/ide/project/ada/website/edit/main/-/content" In this URL, the ada/website is the group and repository name on gitlab. This supposes that the code for your website is hosted on the LIRIS gitlab. The deployment is done by triggering a site rebuild and upload on each commit pushed to gitlab. To do so, build scripts have to be added to your repository, and credentials should be setup to allow the gitlab runner to upload your website on the LIRIS server.
Setup dedicated credentials on your LIRIS account #To upload the website on the server, we will use rsync. We therefore need valid ssh credentials for the connection. Since these credentials will be provided to gitlab, we don’t want these credentials to provided unrestricted access to your LIRIS account. Fortunately rsync provides the rrsync tool for this specific usage.
To setup your LIRIS account on the web server, you must first login through ssh
ssh <username>@connect.liris.cnrs.fr Get the rrsync script from the rsync installation #The rrsync script is distributed along rsync, and is provided in the documentation. You can transfer it to your home directory with
cp /usr/share/doc/rsync/scripts/rrsync ~/ You also need to setup proper permissions on the script to allow its execution.
chmod 700 ~/rrsync Generate a dedicated pair of ssh keys #Using a dedicated key ensures that if the key gets compromised, you can just disable it without impacting other services. SSH keys can use various types of encryption. We propose below safe parameters at the time of writing this article, but you should probably upgrade the key type with up to date standards. You can generate a pair of keys using
ssh-keygen -t ed25519 -f deploy-key -C "website-deploy@gitlab.liris.cnrs.fr" In the above command, deploy-key controls the generated file names, and the -C "..." is optional and adds a comment to the key for you to remember its purpose. The command will ask you to provide a passphrase. Although it is generally good advice to systematically protect SSH keys with a passphrase, since such a passphrase would have to be setup along with the key in the deploy script this is pointless here. Therefore just hit enter and leave the field empty. This should result in an output similar to
Generating public/private ed25519 key pair. Enter passphrase (empty for no passphrase): Enter same passphrase again: Your identification has been saved in deploy-key. Your public key has been saved in deploy-key.pub. S = . | | o . E = +o | | + + * O.=o. | | . * . BoXoo o | | ..+.+=XO=..o=| +----[SHA256]-----+ As mentioned in the output, this generates two files. The deploy-key.pub file is your public key. It is used used to encrypt data before sending it to you, and can be safely distributed to anyone. In the above example, the generated public key looks like
ssh-ed25519 AAAAC3NzaC1lZDI1NTE5AAAAIK+3Ox7LsPXTAR/gqy+AVPdHcO8aJfbwH1VIWno8efgL website-deploy@gitlab.liris.cnrs.fr The deploy-key file is the private key. Create the file if it does not exist. To edit it, at the time of writing, nano or vim are available on the LIRIS server. Authorizing a key can be done by adding a line formatted as
command="$HOME/rrsync <desired directory>",no-agent-forwarding,no-port-forwarding,no-pty,no-user-rc,no-X11-forwarding <desired public key> The <desired directory> should be the path to the directory where the upload will happen. For instance if the website is intended for a project, on the LIRIS server, projects are located in /home-projets and in the project directory, the website should be deployed to the public_html directory. For the present demo website, the path would therefore be
/home-projets/hugo-theme/public_html Note that only project administrators are allowed to upload in their project directories.
The <desired public key> should be the one you generated. In the above example, this is
ssh-ed25519 AAAAC3NzaC1lZDI1NTE5AAAAIK+3Ox7LsPXTAR/gqy+AVPdHcO8aJfbwH1VIWno8efgL website-deploy@gitlab.liris.cnrs.fr This is where the comment gets useful, to be able to quickly identify what the key is intended for, and remove the line if it gets compromised or obsolete.
With the added line in ~/.ssh/authorized_keys, it is now possible rsync to the specified directory using the private key. We therefore now need to provide the private key to gitlab and setup the build and deploy script.
Setup continuous integration on gitlab #Gitlab provides tools to automatically run tasks on repositories. This is done by adding a .gitlab-ci.yml file at the root of your repository describing the tasks. We will also need to provide the private key to the deployment script. The key should not be directly written in the deploy script, since anyone able to read the contents of the repository would have the means to smash the website in your name on the LIRIS server.
Setup continuous integration variables #Variables contain data outside of the repository to be provided to continuous integration tasks. For the deployment, we will need two variables, one to authenticate the LIRIS server to which the website is deployed, and another to provide the private key. Variables can be configured in the Settings > CI/CD panel
From this panel you can navigate to the Variables section, and use the button to add variables.
This opens a side panel to describe the variable. Our first variable will be named SSH_KNOWN_HOSTS and will contain the SSH server keys to ensure that the deploy script connects to the right server. LIRIS server keys can be obtained with
ssh-keyscan connect.liris.cnrs.fr The example below shows the variable configured with the key at the time of writing this article.
Our second variable will be called SSH_PRIVATE_KEY and will contain the private key you previously generated. For this example website, that would be https://hugo-theme.projet.liris.cnrs.fr. The <your login> placeholder should be your LIRIS login.
Beware that the target folder for rsync will be automatically setup by the rrsync command provided in your .ssh/authorized_keys and attached to your SSH key. This means that the target upload directory depends on the key. Therefore do not run the rsync command manually for testing. If you have another SSH key that you usually use to connect to the LIRIS server, and this key gets used for the connection, rsync won’t be redirected to the desired directory and you might wipe your home on the LIRIS server. Monitoring the deployment #Once the .gitlab-ci.yml script is installed in your repository, an icon appears after each commit stating whether the deployment tasks ran successfully.
That would be the green circle next to the commit hash in the image above. Clicking this icon allows you to get details on the deployment tasks. Clicking the tasks yields the output log of the corresponding script, and the built site can be browsed or downloaded from the artifacts of the build task.

Basics #Pages listing persons can be created and customized by creating or editing a directory in your content directory and adding a file named _index.md in that directory. From the original configuration, first add a stage before building the site :
stages: - fetch - build - deploy Next add a task for this stage, meant to run the scripts, and produce member and publication artifacts.
fetch: stage: fetch image: python:3-alpine3.22 tags: - docker variables: GIT_SUBMODULE_STRATEGY: recursive before_script: - pip install poetry script: - cd integration - poetry install - poetry run python import_members.py - poetry run python import_publications.py artifacts: paths: - integration/publications/ - integration/members/ In the above task, if you decided to modify the path to the configuration file or import scripts, you should adapt the script section to navigate to the correct directory and the artifacts/paths to preserve the paths to the members and publications directories produced by the scripts.
Local testing #To locally test the script execution, you should first ensure that you have a valid python installation, and that the necessary dependencies are available. These are provided in the pyproject.toml file. A simple solution to install all the dependencies in a virtual environment without interfering with your local python installation is to use poetry, as done in the Continuous integration task. From the script directory, you can run
poetry install Please refer to poetry documentation for details on using poetry. Once the dependencies are available, assuming you have a configuration file available, you can run the scripts with
poetry run python import_members.py poetry run python import_publications.py If you skipped using poetry to use your local python environment, just remove the poetry run prefix in the commands above.
If the script runs without problems, each will create a folder filled with markdown files, one per member or publication in the corresponding folder.
Data source details #Members #For member imports, the script uses the url
https://liris.cnrs.fr/en/webmaster/export/membres-equipe/{team} where {team} is to be replaced by the name of the desired LIRIS team. This url provides the data as a csv table in English (for member status in particular). The data can also be obtained in French with the url
https://liris.cnrs.fr/webmaster/export/membres-equipe/{team} In the resulting csv, the first column contains the id of the users in the LIRIS system. Using this id, the script then scraps the web page at
https://liris.cnrs.fr/user/{id} From this web page html, the script extracts the picture of the member, and the url for their personal web page. If no picture is found, an avatar is automatically generated using an identicon to avoid gender or ethnicity bias. The generated files are named after the user LIRIS id.
Publications #For publications, the script uses the url
https://liris.cnrs.fr/publications/?type={type}&nom={author}&output=json where the {type} field can be either equipe for the publications of a team or membre for the publications of a single member. The {author}, depending on the selected type, can be either the name of the team or a LIRIS member login. The result is obtained as a json file listing the publications. Most of the fields are extracted directly, and for additional publication information, the script uses the ids field corresponding to the publication identifier on HAL. With this identifier, the HAL API is queried at
https://api.archives-ouvertes.fr/search/ We currently query for the existence of a document associated to the publication to propose a download link, and for the thumbnail id in case you are willing to customize the publication layout on the site and use these thumbnails. The code for this is currently commented in layouts/_partials/publication.html.

CodeFlux is a seminar to keep up to date with trends on coding in the advent of fluid simulation influence in modern languages.

Un thème Hugo pour les membres et les équipes du LIRIS basé sur le thème congo.
